I Do Not Want to be an Entrepreneur
I left my job to make a career pivot, not to launch a company.
I think there is an either/or myth that is falsely perpetuated that says you are either working for a company or you have to start your own.
But, I don’t see it that way. At least not anymore.
I now see the migration of employees leaving the workforce to become self-employed, freelancers/consultants, or entrepreneurs as a trend.
I think this trend will force companies to evolve in order to attract and retain great talent.
There are many benefits to working for yourself - flexible schedules, autonomy, aligning yourself with a clear purpose/vision.
Companies who want to grow will redesign work spaces, teams, and culture to offer these benefits.
But not just that. They will also offer employees a chance to be owners by offering them a stake in the company. Employees will be seen as partners who have a vested interest in seeing the company win.
The shift in culture will value purpose as much as, or more than, profit.
It will be clear that both are necessary in order for businesses to succeed and increase profits over the long term.
Currently, only 33% of the workforce is engaged.
That’s a huge opportunity to transform the way we see “people” within the people/product/process paradigm of businesses.
So, I didn’t leave my job because I wanted to start my own company. I left to help companies cross the bridge so that people like myself don’t have to.
